It is located on the north-eastern part of the island, with a surface area of 39,43 Km 2, at an altitude of 905 m. It has a unique shape, since it ceded part of its terrain to Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which is at a road distance of 15 Km. It’s population is of 14 862.

La Esperanza, the municipal capital, is in a midland region, favoured by the softness of the terrain, a product of volcanic emissions. There appear various volcanic edifices that characterise the landscape: Montaña Carboneras, Birmagen, Pereda, etc.
